I don’t have a collection of creams, lotions, and serums. I don’t think about laugh lines and crow’s feet or care how to prevent them. Magazines I flip through at doctors offices tell me different, outlining my predetermined beauty regimen based on what age decade I fall into. What I have is a bottle of Aveeno face lotion, baby lotion, and some rose water with glycerin. That’s been the deal since my late teens. Tomorrow I will be entering my thirties. It will still be my deal.

I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how I was going to bring in this new decade of my life for myself. Even to the point where I made myself sad over it because I didn’t know how to do it. How was I going to make this birthday (that I consider important and am excited for) any different?

First of all, there was this today:

I asked my husband to take my picture in front of Alexander Calder’s Stegosaurus. Perhaps this might be my birthday tradition for the rest of my life.

In my early twenties I learned about a book/movie called Logan’s Run. I vowed to never watch the movie before I turned thirty. So tonight, the night before I turn thirty, I will make some popcorn and watch Logan’s Run.

Just as I planned all those years ago.

This is a picture of myself with my niece, who experienced snow for the first time tonight. In previous photos, she is without hat. I felt that it was vital that she felt snow on her little head with the fluff-fluff hair. I know some overbearing people might flip their lids over something like that. But her head will freeze! That’s what they would say. No, it won’t. That’s what I would say.
Living in New England, I have learned that people either love snow or hate snow. Some people squeal with delight at the first sign of snowflakes. Others grumble, kick the dust in front of their feet and attempt to verbally derail any joy from snow that others receive.  I can understand being tired of lingering snow and constant snowstorms. But sometimes I take it personally when people speak ill of snow when it first starts to fall. I just want to ask those people where their sense of whimsy is. Sometimes I just want to call them jerks. Sometimes I just want to tell them to shut up. Then I have to remind myself that those are their opinions and that they are entitled to them. I dislike hot weather a great deal (basically, most of summer). I have no sense of whimsy and joy for that.
I want my niece to love the snow. I want her to get excited over future forecasts and first snowflakes. I want her to feel those first snowflakes on her head every time.
That’s important.

I like seltzer water a lot. I like different flavors or seltzer water. I was so excited to find these at the local grocery store the other day. I wanted to document them. The flavors are (as pictured, in alphabetical order):
-cinnamon
-eggnog
-granny smith apple
-pumpkin spice
Say you “ew” all you want. More for me!

This is a felt board I made based on The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh for my toddler class. I used acrylic paint on the felt. The paint makes the felt a little heavy so sometimes certain pieces fall down more than they normally would. I took out a lot of the details and just used what I felt were the key elements to the painting to make it more open ended for the children. I felt that if I tried to recreate the painting too much I’d end up with more of a puzzle and that would have defeated the purpose of the felt board.
That said, it looks great in the room and the children have used it this week. Which makes me happy because now I can make more for them to play with.

In January I donated thirteen inches of my hair to Locks of Love.

I got job at a school that I love and I know that they love me.

In April, we got married!

This fall, husband and I started our own Etsy shop. We also started a related Tumblr and Facebook . (Those are some books that my husband made!)

In October, our fourteen year old kitty passed away.

In November, my mom found out she had stage 4 cancer in her stomach and liver. The day after, my niece was born a month premature. Both are doing well at the moment.

So there it is. It a few days we’ll bid 2011 farewell forever and we’ll welcome 2012.

My nanner bread!
kleinereisbar:

Back in the game…sort of! After almost a year of being out of service the oven is back. The heating element was replaced (an inexpensive DIY job) but finding the time to take advantage of it has been sparse. So enjoy this picture of my banana bread and believe me when I say it was as delicious as it looks beautiful in this picture.

Sometimes, the best things in life are the ones that take the longest. The things that are simple, yet tedious. The things that cramp your fingers, cramp your legs (sitting criss-cross applesauce), and stiffen your back (from hunching over). Such is life when making popcorn and cranberry garland. Or anything else by hand for that matter.
And you know what? It’s some classy stuff and looks great too.

This is from the blog my husband curates and I sometimes post on. I asked him to document my garland (and my hand apparently). How come “garland maker” isn’t a legit profession?
